Getting Started

Use IIT BHU Geo Web Portal - a GIS based Portal on your computer, phone, or tablet, to explore and find more about your Smart Campus - IIT BHU.
Here's a guide to get you started using IIT BHU Geo Web Portal.

As soon as the IIT BHU portal opens up, one can see a satellite view of the IIT BHU Campus. A road network or a route layer is also visible to the user. As soon as the user zooms in from the current view, different layers become visible alongwith corresponding labels associated with them. The layers indicate the features available within the IIT BHU Campus and are visible as per the scale visibility which has been defined for them.

Note: Grouped LayerList, Legend, Query, Directions, Around Me, About this Portal and Share tools remain fixed on the bottom menu bar of the IIT BHU web portal, whereas Measurement, Print, Bookmark and Basemap Gallery tools are available on the right side of the screen. The Scale of the map is visible on the botton left corner and Zoom IN/OUT option is available on the left side of the screen.


Basemap Gallery

The Basemap Gallery tool provides a background of geographical context for the content you wish to display.

You can change the map at any time and select the one you want by using this map gallery. Click on Basemap Gallery icon from the bottom right side of the portal. On the widget, click on one of the listed maps for it to load and serve as your preferred map.
You can select one of the following maps:


Legend

It is important not only to view a map but also to make some sense out of it. A legend provides the map reader meaning of the symbols used to represent features on the map viz Departments, Hostels, Administrative, General Buildings and Grounds within the campus.

Click on Legend icon from the bottom menu bar on the portal. Now, look at the stylized shapes and symbols given on your map, you'll find out these shapes and symbols on legend with what they depict.

Note: The legend changes dynamically as per the scale of the map. The legend is visible if and only if the corresponding layer is visible on the map.

 

Exploring Widgets

There are numerous ways in which you can use the IIT BHU Geo-Web Portal. You can use following tools for map navigation and exploration within the active map frame.

Search

The Search Widget can be found on the top left corner of the active map frame. Search provides user with an opportunity to look for a particular place, address, layer or type of location on a map.

  1. Type in the search term, as you type, you may see words begin to appear below the search box. These are auto-suggestions that may match what you’re interested in.
  2. As actual search result loads, click on the result to view location on the map and information related to it on the pop-up.

Measurement

The Measure /Measurement Widget allows you to draw a line, a series of connected lines (polygon), or mark a point to measure the approximate distance, area, or coordinates of a location respectively.

  1. Click Measurement icon from the top right menu bar on the portal.
  2. Choose Measure Type (Area, Distance, Location), and  Measurement Unit.
  3. Click on your map at the starting point. Move your cursor to your end point, or next point, repeating until you are done. Double click to finish. In case of location, click on a point to view the coordinates of the location.
  4. When done, the measurement result is available on the widget.
  5. Click on the Clear button inside the widget dialog box to clear the results.

Print a map

You can use the Print tool to create a print file of your active map view and send it to your desired printer.
To print a map, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Open a map.
  2. Zoom in and out to reach the map area you want to print.
  3. Click the Print icon from the top right menu bar on the portal.
  4. Type in the Map Title, and select Layout & Format for print.
  5. Click Advanced to open the advanced print features.
  6. In advanced features, under Map scale/extent section, you can choose to preserve either map scale, map extent, or force a specified scale.
  7. Under Layout Metadata section, you can specify the author, add copyright, and select whether you wish to include a legend or not.
  8. Under the Map Size section, you can specify the width and height of the map.
  9. Also, specify the print quality in the DPI textbox. 
  10. Now, to print your map, click on the Print button.
  11. On clicking print, the resulting print file gets created and is available on the widget.
  12. To print your created map, open the print file and press CTRL+P (for PC) on your keyboard to print. Your browser's print box will appear, follow the onscreen instructions.
  13. Click on Clear Prints button to clear all the created print files from the widget.

Bookmark

Click on Bookmark icon on the right side of the portal and then Add in order to add a bookmark of the map and features that are visible to you on the active map frame. It can be accessed later when the user visits the portal another time. The user can name the bookmark and also remove it at his/her discretion.

Default Extent

Click on Default Extent icon from the top left of the portal will zoom in or out on the map so that the default map extent opens. This function proves extremely helpful when you zoom in or out too much on the map and wish to return to your original landing page extent.

Zoom IN or Zoom OUT

To see more details on the map, zoom in or out. On your mobile device, you can use gestures like rotate, tilt, and zoom to quickly move through the map.
There are a few ways to zoom in and out:

  1. In the top left, click + or -.
  2. Scroll using your mouse or pinch on your screen.
  3. Double click using your mouse or pinch on your screen.
  4. To zoom faster, hold down the CTRL key as you zoom in and out with your mouse.

Grouped LayerList

Grouped LayerList Widget is a collection of Layers/facilities. You can select layers from the corresponding group and view data available related to the group to find out location of particular layers/services/facilities.By default, all the layers are turned on and are visible once the user starts zooming in. You can toggle on/off the layers in the group.

  1. Click Grouped LayerList icon from the bottom menu bar of the portal.
  2. On the widget you can view and expand all the group categories listed.
  3. Toggle the layer(s) on/off that you want to view on the map.
  4. Click on a displayed facility to see more information about it on a pop-up.


Query

The Query Widget help a user identify and focus on a set of pre-defined features and find relevant information regarding the inquiry, such as finding features withn the inner parts of a particular building like offices/labs/rooms/halls etc.

  1. Click on Query from the top right menu bar of the portal.
  2. Click one of the queries to execute.
  3. On the query widget, in options section, specify parameters for the task as per the query selected.
  4. Click on Apply from the top to view all the query results on the map area and widget.
  5. Click on Clear Results to close all the query results from the map.

Direction

The Direction Widget helps the user to find  access or route  from one loaction  to another inside the campus. The Direction widget functions on the route layer visible on the map which is a road network dataset exclusively customised accotding to the IIT BHU campus and other surrounding areas.

  1. Click on Direction icon from the bottom menu bar of the portal.
  2. Enter the start and end destinations by typing the addresses in the fields which may autocomplete addresses ,locations, or feature layer field names depending on the configuration or by selecting the location by clicking on the screen.
  3. Optionally more destinations can be added by clicking Add.
  4. Barriers can also be added by the user and in such cases alterante route to the desired location gets computed.
  5. After clicking Get Directions ,the map updates to display the route and directions are displayed in the Direcions widget. The Widget shows the approximate time and distance of the journey .
  6. Click the Print button to open the directions in a new window for printing.
  7. To clear the current set of directions from the map, click Clear, available next to Get Directions

Around Me

Around me Widget allows the users to quickly identify services/facilities near a specified location point. It shows a complete list of all the nearest service providers in all the layers (mainly banks, ATMs, stationaries and eateries) selected along with the aerial distance.

Note: The distance calculated is the aerial distance.

  1. Click on Around Me icon from the bottom menu bar of the portal.
  2. Multi-select the layers you wish to identify around a location.
  3. Drag the slider to set buffer distance.
  4. Now, click on a location on your map to create buffer around it.
  5. Total number of location points gets displayed adjacent to the layer name in the widget.
  6. On clicking layer name, list of all the location points gets visible.
  7. On clicking one of the location point from the widget, all the information related to the location point gets visible on the widget and the location point gets highlighted on the map.
  8. You can also obtain the shortest path to the selected location under the direction tab.

Share Map Link

You can share the app link of the IIT BHU Geo-Web Portal with other interested users. To do so,

  1. Click on Map Link icon from the top right menu bar of the portal.
  2. To share map link, copy the map link and e-mail. You can also share the link through your social media handles.

  1. Click on the Feedback widget. A new Survey123 window appears.
  2. On the feedback form, choose feedback type (Compliment, Suggestion, and Complaint).
  3. Select from the Categories that best fit the feedback.
  4. Add Comments and provide Personal Details.
  5. Click Submit to send feedback to us.
